Insider’s Guide to Special Beer Releases During GABF

September 12, 2017 |

As we’ve all come to know, the Great American Beer Festival has far greater implications for Colorado beer fans that extend beyond the four day festival itself. One of those external benefits is the growing practice of out-of-state breweries utilizing the week to make a special limited drop of beers either as a means to test the market or just to make a splash to help grow their brands. In previous years, breweries such as Fremont, Perennial, and Burial have all used GABF week as a launch pad toward regular, or in some cases semi-regular distribution to Colorado. In other scenarios such as last year’s short-lived Bell’s Brewing drop, these brief market flirtations can help stoke the hype for breweries that may eye a longer term distribution expansion in the future.

Rockmill Brewery | Tripel

September 11, 2017 |

Ask most people to picture Ohio, and they’ll probably think of flat farmland covered in soybeans and corn stretching for miles toward the horizon and broken up only by farmhouses and small towns. That’s an accurate enough image for much of Ohio, but as you head toward the southeast corner of the state, the landscape becomes something else entirely. This region is hilly and rugged, wooded and more wild than the tamed crop lands of the rest of the state. These are the foothills of the Appalachians, and this region of the Buckeye state feels like it has more in common with its neighbors, Kentucky and West Virginia, than its does with the rest of Ohio.

Colorado’s next elite level sour / wild beer producer doesn’t have a physical taproom, nor does it actually have its own production facility, in fact it hasn’t actually released its first beer to the public… at least not yet. Despite its unconventional start, Amalgam Brewing, which has been quietly taking root for the past three years, will officially launch this weekend with the release of Ascension, a golden sour ale aged in a combination of neutral oak and chardonnay barrels.

Silver City Brewery | Wily Temptress

September 7, 2017 | 1

I was first introduced to the Bremerton based brewery Silver City a few years ago, when I was lucky enough to sit down with Daniel Frantz on the back porch of my favorite Seattle bottle shop. Since meeting Frantz, who is the marketing guru for the brewery, I’ve been fortunate enough to familiarize myself with the brewery’s style and culture – this familiarization thanks to the consumption of countless bombers and 6-packs, as well as tours and phone calls with Silver City brewers and sales directors.

After all this time, two things stand-out to me: The brewery is fueled and run by some of the most passionate and knowledgeable people in craft, and every single beer Silver City puts out will be nothing short of stellar. If a beer has a Silver City label, it’s worth having.
