Beerology | A Little History Behind Mexican Lagers
May 5, 2020 | Korey DavidHappy Cinco de Mayo! Though you might be celebrating a little differently than usual this year, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a few Mexican-inspired craft beers. Plus, consider the positives: No dealing with blackouts in a crowded bar spilling their margaritas on your lap while you impatiently wait for chips and salsa on the establishment’s busiest day of the year. For some of you, a crowded bar seems like a wistful dream, something you might be longing for after six weeks of solitude, or perhaps you just miss being on the blackout end of the spectrum so you can forget about this nightmare. Regardless, if you’ve ever wondered where Mexican Lagers come from, here’s a little beerology to pair with your Cinco de Mayo crushers.
Beers Inspired by Mexican Culinary Flavors for Cinco de Mayo
May 5, 2020 | David NilsenIt’s Cinco de Mayo!
Today you get to drink plenty of beer, chow down on some Mexican carryout and unfriend every single person who makes a terrible Taco Tuesday joke.
While there are tons of craft breweries out there brewing crisp, refreshing Mexican Lagers and big, luxurious, Mexican chocolate-inspired Imperial Stouts (and you should totally check those out), why not celebrate with one of these beers inspired by Mexican culinary flavors and traditions?
Casa Humilde Cerverceria | Campesino Saison
May 5, 2020 | Mike ZollerDo you remember the last beer you had at a bar or brewery? It’s one of those things that I don’t think I’ll ever forget as the “stay-at-home” order will be a defining moment for all of us.
Port Orleans Brewing Co | Riverfront Low Tide
May 4, 2020 | Katie de la RosaQuarantine has not been kind to the beer gut. Society is entering the sixth week of lockdown, where, for a lot of craft beer drinkers, lurks a fridge full of hazy IPAs, pastry Stouts and probably even an expired Pale Ale that has been neglected on the back of the shelf. And lord only knows what barrel-aged and sour goodness most of those drinkers have waiting for them in a cellar.
The beer belly has grown ever stronger, ever larger, during these unprecedented times.

Jester King | Dark Matter
May 1, 2020 | Katie KalkAs the days slowly blend together, it’s easy to forget about all of the events we’ve missed. Special occasions that have flowed by us without any pomp and circumstance. Its understandable to mourn these events, even in the midst of greater suffering. One of these events was South By Southwest, the two-week arts, culture and technology conference in Austin, Texas. Not only is SXSW a great party, but it is a crucial publicity moment for businesses big and small. One of the many new products that was set to debut during SXSW is the beer Dark Matter, a collaboration between Austin institution Jester King brewery and Chicago coffee shop Dark Matter.
Ultimate 6er | The Last Dance
April 30, 2020 | Mike ZollerGrowing up in the suburbs of Chicago in the 90s spoiled me as a basketball fan. When I was five years old, I remember my mom giving me a wooden spoon and pot to go out into our driveway to make noise right after the Chicago Bulls won the first NBA Championship in 1991. I probably didn’t quite understand what was going on.

Maxline Brewing | Raspberry Basil Saison
April 29, 2020 | Chea FranzWhile springtime in Colorado can be tumultuous with unpredictable weather, a picturesque sunny and clear day in the Centennial state means one thing: patio season. Located in a city that runs deep with craft beer heritage and culture, Fort Collins-based Maxline Brewing has one of the best patios in town due to its heavy rotation of live music and food trucks during the warmer months.
A popular seasonal that comes back year-after-year, just in time for patio weather, is Maxline’s Raspberry Basil Saison. While we can’t enjoy this delicious beer on their patio currently, we can certainly grab a crowler or six-pack to imbibe at home—with shades, of course.
Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company | JAWN Pale Ale
April 29, 2020 | E.G. MettsJawn – /jôn/ – (noun)
“Eastern Pennsylvania slang used to refer to a person, place, thing or event that one need not or can not give specific name to.”
Not as in I jawn, you jawn, he… she… we… jawn. That usage would be incorrect. The proper usage of “jawn” is for any and all nouns. Including Neshaminy Creek JAWN Pale Ale.
5 Questions with Maplewood Co-Owner & Head Brewer Adam Cieslak
April 28, 2020 | Taylor LaabsChicago’s Maplewood Brewery & Distillery has produced excellent beers and spirits from their quaint brewpub since 2014. Their 10BBL and 250L Kothe hybrid brewhouse is easily viewed from one of several plush chairs that adorns their always-popular “Lounge” space that looks into the brewhouse through several large windows. With beers like Son of Juice IPA, Fat Pug Oatmeal Milk Stout and Charlatan Pale Ale, lines to get into the Maplewood Lounge are frequent and long—especially on a nice Saturday. Although the in-person bar visits have stopped (for now) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Maplewood’s popularity within its Logan Square and larger Chicago craft beer community remains. To find out more about what makes the small but mighty operation hum, how Maplewood has adjusted its business to current times and what comes next, we asked Co-Owner and Head Brewer Adam Cieslak five questions.
Temperance Beer Co. | Might Meets Right
April 28, 2020 | Craft Beer JoeBarrel-aged stouts were once a rarity but have now become increasingly easier to procure. But, just like all craft beer styles, the flavors that define these stouts have evolved. For the longest time, high ABV and intense flavors of spirits was the goal. Now, many breweries are making barrel-aged stouts that mimic candy and desserts. Read More

April 24, 2020 | Dan OldsIf you are like me, then you’ve recently taken the part-time job of home-school teacher. My challenge has been to come up with interactive lessons that will keep my kids engaged and distract them from destroying the house. As the weather gets warmer, our science lessons have been moved to our backyard and the curriculum has been about bugs. Lucky for me, there is a beer for that: Bug Zapper from Avery Brewing Co. Hopefully, as we progress into summer, this beer will complement cool, relaxing nights and our encounters with some awesomely cool bugs in the great outdoors.
