So many apostrophes. With all the hub-bubbin’ about 4 Noses new Boulder taproom and sour barrel-aging facility, one of the Broomfield-based brewery’s newest creations might have been a bit lost in in the shuffle.
‘Bout Effin’ Time is 4 Noses‘ first Imperial IPA, released at the end of March this year. For those who love hops and would enjoy a callback to the pre-sour-crazy days of hoppy beer’s heydey, this is a can to try and get your nose in.

The legend of the radler dates back nearly a century to post World War I Germany, when an innkeeper named Franz Xaver Kugler, opened a tavern and tried to capitalize on the newest craze of bicycling by working to have a bike path built right to his establishment.
On the day that thousands of bicyclists showed up demanding a beer, Kugler realized he would not have enough. He quickly remembered a stash of lemon soda he had, cut it 50/50 with his beer supply, and ultimately saved the day and gave birth to a legend.
Revolution Brewing Finds Sustained Success, Growth in Their Hero IPA Series

Sometimes you take the best things in life for granted. Chicago’s craft beer foundation is built on excellent ales like Anti-Hero and Daisy Cutter, but they no longer generate the lines and Untappd check-ins of past years. It’s not their fault—Chicago drinkers have so many great craft beer options at their disposal that it often becomes overwhelming. So how do you consistently churn out excellent flagships while appealing to the “newness” decree of today’s craft beer drinker?
One valid option is Revolution Brewing’s Hero series. With taproom-only releases, unique 6-pack offerings and comic-inspired variety packs, the Hero line has helped the city’s largest independent brewer stand out from the fray and consistently provide something new to the masses. Each new offering allows Head Brewer Jim Cibak a chance to flex his brewing muscles in new and exciting ways. His latest notable creation is Cryo-Hero. I spoke to Jim and the Revolution team about the new Hero variant, the complexities of that brewing process and what other exciting beers they have planned for the coming months.

FlyteCo Brewing is a new aviation-themed brewery located in the Berkeley neighborhood of Denver and their reputation is taking off. Although they only opened their doors on March 9, their tasting room has been consistently packed with happy beer drinkers. It’s no surprise why they’re so popular: Every beer has been delicious, the space is unique with plenty of seating and it’s staffed with knowledgeable beertenders.

10th Annual Illinois Craft Beer Week Kicks Off

In 2018 a lot of changes happened to Illinois’ celebration of craft beer. For the first time, Chicago Craft Beer Week was renamed to Illinois Craft Beer Week (ICBW), Beer Under Glass (BUG) moved to a Friday and the event lasted two weeks.
2019’s Illinois Craft Beer Week will follow suit to the 2018 event as BUG will continue to kick-off the festivities on Friday, May 10, at the Garfield Park Conservatory. However, ICBW will last just one week.

Colorado Brewers Guild Bids Farewell to Steve Kurowski

Over the past decade, there may be no more iconic figure, and beard, that has holistically represented Colorado craft beer, than Steve Kurowski. Today, his tenure is coming to a close after nine years of service, to become Marketing Director for Laws Whiskey House. While serving as the Operations, Marketing and Events Director for the Colorado Brewers Guild (CBG), Kurowski not only helped grow the organization from just under 100 members to now over 250, but also brought stability and greater national awareness to Colorado’s craft beer scene.

Regret is hard to live with, especially when that thing was right in front of you. My story begins at Brewery Bhavana in downtown Raleigh. My wife and I attended one of their private parties where they served up some of their signature dishes and drinks. Edamame and ginger dumplings, pork and mushroom bao, an open bar featuring many of their core brews and if that weren’t enough, at either end of the room they popped bottles of barrel-aged beauties. To try it all, you either had to be super lucky or a pushy jerk. For better or worse, I was neither. So, I missed out on a beer that I thought would be gone forever: Patina Gold #1, a peach and apricot sour aged for four months in a Cabernet foeder.
Fortunately, Bhavana had the good sense to produce more. Even more fortunately, I found a bottle of Patina Gold sitting in the dusty back room of Chapel Hill’s Bottle Rev. Given the price ($14 a bottle), I had to think twice about buying it, but only twice. The regret from earlier, missed opportunity was gnawing at me.

A new chapbook by Scratch Brewing co-founder and brewer Marika Josephson lays out a blueprint for what it means to run a true farmhouse brewery in the 21st century.
“There is an ironic disconnect in craft beer in which drinkers care a lot about beer being made locally but don’t know or don’t care about where the ingredients themselves are from,” said Josephson when I interviewed her for a story for Civil Eats in November 2017.
The quote could serve as a thesis statement for her new chapbook Keeping the “Farm” in “Farmhouse Beer”, published by Good Beer Hunting in 2018.

McFate Brewing Acquires the Rights to Fate Brewing Name

After an arduous legal battle and three years later, McFate Brewing Company in Scottsdale, Arizona is getting their name back. Fate.
If you are unfamiliar with the story, back in 2016, Fate Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado filed suit against then Fate Brewing Company in Scottsdale, Arizona for the rights to the name. Fate Brewing Company in Scottsdale was forced to rebrand to McFate, even though the two breweries had co-existed for more than three years under the same name. The reaction to the lawsuit by fans of both breweries was swift, with an outpouring of support for McFate and an overwhelming resentment toward Fate Brewing Company.
