Can you believe it’s almost May? It might be tough to believe considering a large chunk of the nation dealt with snow this past week! April’s fickle weather aside, there is much to celebrate:in this week’s edition of What We’re Drinking. Hundreds of millions have been vaccinated; we flew a helicopter on Mars and today is German Beer Day. Those all sound like good reasons to raise a glass and say Cheers — or Prost!

From Boulevard to Budweiser, Kansas City and St. Louis boast some of the largest breweries in the country. However, Missouri’s Craft Beer scene extends far outside of the most populous cities. There are many breweries in Springfield, the Ozarks and Columbia, Missouri, for example, that are producing quality brews with fiercely loyal local followers. These breweries see distribution across the state, and have begun gaining more traction as the craft beer market continues to grow. One such brewery is Columbia’s Broadway Brewery.

Earth Day isn’t just once a year celebration for Lawson’s Finest Liquids, it’s a 365-day celebration. Reducing their impact on the planet is a year-round effort for the Vermont brewery.
Lawson’s Finest latest effort includes the announcement of a 495-module solar parking canopy that will offset 50% of the brewery’s power usage. Lawson’s Finest has partnered with SunCommon, a solar energy solution to install the solar panels above the parking lot. The solar panels are fully permitted and plan to be completed this summer.

Mexico Calling from Cruz Blanca Brewery is the beer that Mexican lagers should aspire to be. In recent years, there has been an influx of breweries trying their hand at making a craft version of one the most macro styles of beer on the market. What you’re left with are good beers that end up tasting nothing like a Corona, Dos Equis, Modelo or whatever the brewer drew inspiration from. The beers tend to end up with some punny name consisting of Spanish words that a brewer learned during his high school spring break in Cancun.

As we all attempt to bring back a level of normalcy to our lives, hanging out at a brewery might seem low on that list… until you remember all the great conversations, fantastic beers and a sense of community breweries provide.
COVID-19 has caused the cancellation of beer festivals, forced breweries to close and meant that jobs are lost. While the world is not back to 100%, case rates are coming down and, with proper safety measures in place, things are opening up. A “beer week” might be the perfect antidote to a long and frustrating lock-down that is being slowly lifted.
