What We’re Drinking | April 23, 2021
April 23, 2021 | Mathew PowersCan you believe it’s almost May? It might be tough to believe considering a large chunk of the nation dealt with snow this past week! April’s fickle weather aside, there is much to celebrate:in this week’s edition of What We’re Drinking. Hundreds of millions have been vaccinated; we flew a helicopter on Mars and today is German Beer Day. Those all sound like good reasons to raise a glass and say Cheers — or Prost!
Broadway Brewery | Flor Blanca Mexican Lager
April 23, 2021 | Katie CamlinFrom Boulevard to Budweiser, Kansas City and St. Louis boast some of the largest breweries in the country. However, Missouri’s Craft Beer scene extends far outside of the most populous cities. There are many breweries in Springfield, the Ozarks and Columbia, Missouri, for example, that are producing quality brews with fiercely loyal local followers. These breweries see distribution across the state, and have begun gaining more traction as the craft beer market continues to grow. One such brewery is Columbia’s Broadway Brewery.

Maine Beer Co. Prides Itself in Doing What’s Right
April 22, 2021 | Kindsey BernhardIt’s easy to be a brewery that makes good beer. What’s harder is being a brewery that makes good beer and does the right thing. When brothers David and Daniel Kleban founded Maine Beer Company in 2009, they set out with a mission to do what’s right – no matter what. For themselves. Their staff. And the planet.

New Belgium’s Torched Earth Ale for Earth Day Is, Literally, Hot Garbage
April 22, 2021 | Jaclyn MenendezI’m not sure it’s appropriate to say “Happy Earth Day” anymore. In the face of our rapidly warming planet, the destruction of our natural resources, and the extinction of countless species, it seems more fitting to simply say, “Remember How Much We Blew It?” and reflect fondly on how the Indian cheetah used to exist. In fact, because of this grim state of the world, Earth Day is best celebrated in two ways – taking action, and drinking a beer.
Rethinking Your POS System With Arryved
April 21, 2021 | Emma WargoletThis post was sponsored by Arryved.
When it comes to a point-of-sale system, most software companies try to incorporate too many unnecessary features in an attempt to cater to a wide variety of industries and use cases. However, when Arryved was developing their platform, they knew specifically that they were building this out for breweries, leading to the ability to be more innovative and specialized towards the brewing industry. Despite having breweries in mind, Arryved is also fully functional for full-service kitchens, brewpubs and restaurants. The flexibility of Arryved, along with many additional benefits, allows their POS system to stand out in a sea of systems that were not designed for the craft beer world.
New Solar Canopy Will Provide 60% of Lawson’s Finest’s Power Needs
April 21, 2021 | Kindsey BernhardEarth Day isn’t just once a year celebration for Lawson’s Finest Liquids, it’s a 365-day celebration. Reducing their impact on the planet is a year-round effort for the Vermont brewery.
Lawson’s Finest latest effort includes the announcement of a 495-module solar parking canopy that will offset 50% of the brewery’s power usage. Lawson’s Finest has partnered with SunCommon, a solar energy solution to install the solar panels above the parking lot. The solar panels are fully permitted and plan to be completed this summer.
Ultimate 6er | The 93rd Academy Awards
April 21, 2021 | Scott JohnsonCovering the Academy Awards is a PorchDrinking tradition, even when the entire industry is out of order. Several of this year’s nominees were promoted via word of mouth as the influence of the box office and large marketing campaigns were completely minimized. So what we’re left with is a very diverse selection of films over the numerous categories that many people may not have heard of until they were chosen. And fitting to 2020, several of these are incredibly heavy about handling or becoming overwhelmed by adversity.
Cruz Blanca Brewery | Mexico Calling
April 21, 2021 | Jesse ValencianaMexico Calling from Cruz Blanca Brewery is the beer that Mexican lagers should aspire to be. In recent years, there has been an influx of breweries trying their hand at making a craft version of one the most macro styles of beer on the market. What you’re left with are good beers that end up tasting nothing like a Corona, Dos Equis, Modelo or whatever the brewer drew inspiration from. The beers tend to end up with some punny name consisting of Spanish words that a brewer learned during his high school spring break in Cancun.
Sacramento Beer Week is Back
April 20, 2021 | Robert FrenchAs we all attempt to bring back a level of normalcy to our lives, hanging out at a brewery might seem low on that list… until you remember all the great conversations, fantastic beers and a sense of community breweries provide.
COVID-19 has caused the cancellation of beer festivals, forced breweries to close and meant that jobs are lost. While the world is not back to 100%, case rates are coming down and, with proper safety measures in place, things are opening up. A “beer week” might be the perfect antidote to a long and frustrating lock-down that is being slowly lifted.

Casa Humilde | Maizal
April 19, 2021 | Mike ZollerWhen you hear Mexican Lager you might typically think Corona or Modelo, but the style is popular in the craft beer community as well. These Lagers are usually a bit sweeter and made with flaked corn, which usually makes the style drier and crisper.
What We’re Drinking | April 16, 2021
April 16, 2021 | Seth GarlandSpring imposes upon the world a level of uncertainty that’s both invigorating and maddening. With this uncertainty comes a full spectrum of desires; wet snow convinces the palate that we must drink a heavy Stout. Fresh, sunny days inspire us to seek out something a bit lighter and crisper.
The changing of seasons can make one reflect on getting a bit older as well. I used to be an extremely cynical youth. I started shaving my head at an early age — by the time I wanted to grow it back, I couldn’t. I was rocking the full Jean-Luc Picard by age 28. I also started feeling a bit more self-conscious about my physique.

Xul Beer Co. | Pastry Kids on the Block Vol. 2
April 16, 2021 | Jason MurphyHave you ever been sipping on a beer, eating a certain food, or getting a whiff of a certain smell and it invokes a memory, or takes you back to a time in your past? This is called sensory memory, and we as humans absorb these by our sense organs all throughout our lives. Certain foods, drinks, sights, sounds or smells can awaken one of these short memories and take you back in time to a place you’ve been before. Pastry Kids On The Block Vol. 2 from Xul Beer Co. does just that with their delectable Fruited Sour.
Goldspot Brewing & Lady Justice Brewing Celebrate Major Milestone
April 15, 2021 | Tristan ChanRepresentation matters. In an industry where diversity has been under-prioritized for decades, craft beer has finally begun recognizing the importance of creating a more inclusive community. And while having conversations around diversity and inclusion are a great step forward, representation is still the most important path toward true change.
